Apparently when Wayne Simien was a junior at KU he found God. And while I don’t always understand that, for him it was a good thing. It got him off the drinking, the drugs and the women. But the next part of his story is what I really find interesting.
After college he of course entered the NBA and that’s where he discovered there is no room for God. Players figured it would only be a matter of time before he was out boozing it up, whoring it up, drugging it up. Some even made it a mission to turn him. But he wasn’t having any part of that and after a couple years he left the NBA. Not because he was hurt and not because no one wanted him, but because he couldn’t find a place there where it was okay to believe what he did. And while I still don’t understand or agree with the whole ‘god’ thing, I find it sad that a guy who is so good at basketball…a guy who bleeds crimson and blue…thought the only way to stay true was to remove himself from that group of people. It crushes me a group like the NBA is so corrupt and dysfunctional that there is no place for a Christian. What a great group of role models we have there.
Simien is back in Lawrence and I think he’ll do much greater things there than any of those players will ever do.
